Yakushima Island

The first site in Japan to be registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage (in 1993), Yakushima Island(屋久島)boasts pristine nature. It is home to Yakusugi Cedar trees(屋久杉)of more than a thousand years old, growing luxuriantly at Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravin(白谷雲水峡), the Nagata Inakahama beach(永田いなか浜), a world leading sea turtle spawning ground also known for its beautiful sunset, and the Ohko-no-Taki Waterfall(大川の滝), a majestic waterfall of 88 metres where one can walk right up to its plunge pool.
