Satsuma Kiriko Cut Glass

Satsuma Kiriko Cut Glass

During the Bakumatsu period(幕末)(the mid 19th century), the Satsuma Kiriko cut glass(薩摩切子)was developed and produced for foreign export. The skill of production was lost in the early Meiji period (around the 1870s), but was revived again in 1985 in Kagoshima. Thick coloured glass layered onto transparent glass is carefully cut to achieve an exquisite colour gradient called “Bokashi”. The Satsuma Kiriko is purely handmade by highly skilled artisans even today.
