Mount Sakurajima（桜島） is a highly active volcano located across from Kagoshima City（鹿児島市）, separated by the Kinko Bay（錦江湾）. Mount Sakurajima used to be an island (floating on Kinko Bay) but as a result of a massive eruption in 1914, (lava flow) connected its southeastern side to the Osumi Peninsula（大隅半島）. The volvano comprises two main peaks, with the southern peak “Minamidake” being the active crater. With its foothills covered in rolling lava plains, the majestic Mount Sakurajima is a great sight to behold.
